Creating a Web Design Portfolio

I have been trying to figure out how to showcase my skills. I'd like to have an online portfolio that shows some of my better designs. I have a few questions before I get started. These questions include “when to use screenshots vs. links to active sites”. I think that I should probably make screenshots whenever I make (or redesign) a page to document the site in its existing state. I may not save the old design if I redo it but the screen shot will document it. It also gives me something to look back at and compare with the new design.

Spam Module

I just installed and enabled the Drupal Spam module for this site. I had left the “Create New Account” option available in case somebody reasonable reading this page wanted to join in on the fun. Unfortunately it was hijacked instead by a vile creature from the underbelly of society who thought he/she/it could use it for some unknown gain.

My Bird Database (online)

So I've been reading a book on PHP and MySQL to help me learn how to tweak Drupal and just to become a more well rounded Web Developer. The book is called “Web Database Applications with PHP and MySQL” by Hugh E. Williams and David Lane.

Drupal Updated !

I've updated this blog to the latest stable release of Drupal (version 5.1). There are some customizations to my custom-made theme "PuRupal" that I'm still working on but for the most part the move is complete. I really like the new version for a number of reasons.
  • The new themes that come with the core installation are nicer and more flexible.
  • The jquery color picker is very cool. I'm looking forward to seeing what else I can do with this enigmatic javascript library

Google Search, and Google Maps APIs

I just added a Google search function to my home page. It should search content from this site but it doesn't seem to work. Paul Boag's recent podcast mentioned ways to add “ajax-y” things (google maps) to your website without having to learn very much code. I plan to check it out and see what I can do with this. Perhaps a good google map will come in handy whenever explaining something with a spatial component.

New Blog Subdomain

Aha ... You can now get to this website by going to blog.jbchurchill.com or by going to www.jbchurchill.com/drupal/. I'm not really sure why I thought to put links here. I guess I'm just hypertext-crazy. I suppose you could click each link and watch the URL (and nothing else) change. I thought it was pretty cool but then again you know what they say about simple things ... !!??!!

Site Debut !!!!

Cool. I did it. I installed Drupal. It was a little bit scary in there but I managed to figure it out. It was probably easier than some parts of the configuration (which still needs a fair amount of work). I may want to setup a subdomain for this site (i.e. blog.jbchurchill.com/). I'm pretty excited.
