Florida Vacation and Birding

My wife Donna and I got back recently from vacationing in South Florida. We stayed in Key Largo. We birded and visited beaches in the Keys and South Florida. We had been warned that there aren't many beaches in the Keys but we found most of the State Park beaches to be pretty nice (although often not very extensive). The beach at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park was nice but the beach at Bahia Honda was small and we had to locate ourselves up in the vegetation to avoid the tide.

February Pelagic Trip

The February Pelagic trip I took (February, 23, 2008) from See Life Paulagics was an excellent trip. I'll have fond memories of this one for a long time. We saw lots of great birds but perhaps even more impressive was the show of Whales and Dolphins.

Gone E-birding

So I've been checking out the ebird website which I believe is a coordinated effort from Audubon and Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Long-time Maryland Birder Marshall Iliff has posted to our listserve MDOsprey urging us to upload our sightings to e-bird. He pointed out to me that I've posted a detailed list to the listserve and that it would have been just as easy to post to e-bird and then have the list e-mailed back to me making the post easier.

Topic: ... Featured Drupal Site

While trying to find an e-mail address for the compiler of the C&O Canal Bird Count, I discovered that the website that DC Audubon has set up is a Drupal site.

Birding Info on the Open Directory Project

There are maintained lists of links on the web (see These are edited by volunteers. Google takes advantage of this so there must be something to it if it works better than their web crawler. But does it ? I found dead links on it like the old link to the Allegany Bird Club Web site. It did have the new link so why isn't the old link deleted ? It simply re-directs you to the new site anyway.

My Bird Database (online)

So I've been reading a book on PHP and MySQL to help me learn how to tweak Drupal and just to become a more well rounded Web Developer. The book is called “Web Database Applications with PHP and MySQL” by Hugh E. Williams and David Lane.

Eurasian Collared Dove (more birding)

On Sunday, I got to see the Eurasian Collared Dove in Frederick County, MD. Thats a new state bird for me. I've seen them before in Florida and We'll probably see a bunch of them when Donna and I go to Florida in a few weeks.

Today in Birding

Today I got a new County Bird in Garrett County. It was a Blue Grosbeak that was reported last week at Russell Road by John Hubbel. I also saw a Mockingbird which is unusual in Garrett County. I also confirmed Eastern Kingbird for the Breeding Bird Atlas Project.
